How to beat stress effectively

Unless you're a baby who doesn't go to school or work, who just stays at home and plays with his toys, stress is a big pain in the ass for you. Take a few minutes off your daily rush and dedicate them to some relaxing and de-stressing techniques. Thank God, the de-stressing "industry" is flourishing!

Stress facts

You must know that not any kind of stress is bad for you. There are two popular types of stress:

* Distress? this is what we are used to call "stress" when we feel tired and sick of something (job, life regime, daily problems) and in the impossibility to escape it.

* Eustress? is an alternate form of stress, but not so bad for the one who experiences it. If you enjoy putting yourself frequently to the test, challenging your abilities, you might be aware of the "eustress feeling". Let's see... You are used to delay your tasks up to the last moment and still congratulate yourself because everything you do under pressure works out extremely well? That's eustress ? enjoying waiting to the last minute. The difference between the two forms of stress is made exclusively by your own perception: if you see work under pressure as a positive thing, it's eustress; if you see it as a negative, disturbing thing, it's distress.

Stress symptoms
If you're not sure about what you are experiencing, there are some clear physical and behavioral stress signs. Check them out:

a)Physical signs
First of all, you feel incredibly tired (wake up with great difficulty, have a sleepy disposition all day). From this fatigue to harsh headaches or even migraines is only a small step. Your efforts' efficiency is seriously decreased as you lack concentration (an hour's work may be extended through the day and the results are questionable).
Your stomach starts aching without any obvious reason. You sweat more abundantly than usually and lose your sleep because of unresolved problems that worry you. Your sex life becomes anemic (you just don't feel like making love anymore). Hypertension and tachycardia are possible too.

b)A stressed person becomes quiet and isolates from other people. If forced to communicate, this person is nervous and doesn't have the necessary patience to explain things calmly. Women like to shop during stressful periods while men drink and smoke more than usually. Bingeing is another unhealthy habit induced by stress.

Floatation
Well, it's not a new invented way of releasing stress. In th US it is used since the fifties, initially as a method of studying brain activity while the body is at rest.

You need: a big tank filled with water (as warm as body temperature, maximum 36?C). Its level should reach your waistline. For increased "pleasure factor", pour some relaxing salts in the water.

What you do: you actually float at the surface of the water. Floatation of the human body is only possible if the person is very relaxed and has a regulated breathing rhythm. It's like resting on a waterbed, only you don't feel the bed under your body.

What it does: Floatation reduces activity in the left side of the brain (the one who forces us to be logical) and stimulates activity in the right side (the one responsible with creativity). It also relaxes every muscle in your body.

Options: If you find it difficult to cut contacts with reality, you can put on an atmospheric music record. You don't have such a big tank at home? Try floatation in the nearest pool (or sea, if it's hot outside).

Exercising
It's been long accepted that any form of sport or exercise does a lot of good not only to your body, but also to your mind.

You need: Put on your sport shoes, make some pleasant music play in your ear plugs and go for a "wander" in a quiet park. If you don't feel like running, don't feel "pressured" to do it just because you're dressed for the occasion and you're in the right place too.

What you do: Focus on something really nice like a bird, or a lake view and let your mind go astray. Stretch a little to relax your muscles. It's a minimum of exercise you can do. Example: Stand up straight, feet hip width apart. Lift arms above your head and place palms together, fingers pointing up. Breathe in and stretch your body upwards. Keep your hips facing forward and, without twisting your pelvis tilt the upper part of your body to the right while you breathe out. Hold the position for a few seconds then come back to the centre and stretch upwards again. Repeat the same exercise to the left and return to the centre.

What it does: Exercise increases your body temperature (and this clearly makes you feel as relaxed as if taking a warm bath), stimulates serotonin and noradrenaline (hormones that induce the feel-good state) and helps your mind take a break.

Options: Feel super-stressed and angry? Choose a more demanding type of exercising (run, lift weights, do some kickboxing, etc.) and feel the anger go away with every step of it.

Sleep well
How many hours a night do you sleep? If you stay in bed less than 8 hours, you must be aware that your stress may be partly caused by this. On the other hand, if you are too stressed, your sleep will be affected. Don't count sheep, if this is your case. Pour some water into the bathtub (just to reach your ankles), add some lavender essential oil and take a 5-minute walk through water.

As for sleeping habits, there was a time when parents could fool us with the saying "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise". Not anymore, since scientists discovered that a person who goes to sleep late and gets up in the late morning enjoys a bigger mental speed and a better memory.

Laugh as often as possible
Or, at least, smile. Laughter triggers positive emotions and banishes stress hormones. Plus a healthy laughter session decreases muscular tension on the spot.

Sing
Scientists, again, noticed that singing is a natural way of using sound vibration to stimulate the release of energy in our body. A happy state of mind can be induced by vowel sounds connected with "m". For example, sing a "mamemimomu" song. When we sing we concentrate on singing, therefore dark thoughts disappear.

Eat a favorite thing
What is it that you feel when you taste one of your favorite dishes? I bet it is relaxation and deep well-being. So eat anything you feel the urge to. Bananas and chocolate are especially recommended (the first rises the serotonin level, the second gives a lift to the sugar levels in your blood). On the other hand, there are also foods that can stress the body. If, because of inadequate alimentation, your body has a certain nutrient deficiency, you can be sure it is stressed. For an optimum function of the adrenal glands, the body needs vitamin B5, C and magnesium. Vitamin C has an important role in the daily stress control. Unfortunately it is also the only vitamin that can't be stored by our bodies, so daily intakes are a must. When you have a period of great stress (exams, deadlines, etc.), increase the vitamin C supply (from kiwi, citrus fruits, peppers, berries and potatoes ? the richest sources.

Playing with the golf ball

You need: A simple golf ball is enough to make some of your stress disappear.

What you do: Squeeze the ball between your thumb and forefinger and roll it around 50 times. After that, place the ball between your palms and roll it again up to 50 times.

What it does: Playing with the golf ball counts as an efficient massage technique. It stimulates pressure points on your hands that can relax your stomach muscles and control your breathing.

Option: Instead of the golf ball you can search for a special anti-stress ball.
